Review

"All the quilt patterns featured in the book and on the included CD are creative and colorful. Of course my favorite part of the book are all the letters, which gives you a glimpse of what life was like during the 1930s. Overall, I think this a great book to own for quilters or historical buffs alike." --Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer"If you love a good story, making pieced quilts or enjoy creating quilts with a variety of different designs, this is an ideal addition to your bookshelf." --Into Craft"I liked the original Farmer's Wife book but I love this version. Each traditional block has been renamed as either a woman's name or a noun that relates to a woman- like 'Granny'. The blocks vary from relatively simple to complex with a fiendish number of pieces to sew together but they are all beautifully presented in a mix of reproduction fabrics and solids. A range of construction methods are offered. All the blocks have templates and foundation paper piecing options and there are rotary cut options for pieces that can be easily measured." --Very Kerry Berry"In my wildest dreams I would be able to sit down and enjoyably sew this entire book (The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt)." --Very Shannon

Let me start by saying how much I love this quilt and the farmer's wife 1920 edition. That being said you need to be careful! There are lots of typos throughout the patterns for the squares ex. The wrong number to cut or even missing a piece. I am making the queen and it says to make 94 of the 99 squares. You actually need all 99. Also it says to buy 4 yards of fabric for the white between the squares, I just finished cutting them out and I probably used about a yard and a half.Don't get me wrong I love this quilt it's absolutely adorable but it's been super annoying dealing with all the mistakes. The author and editor need to take a look at what they made and fix the mistakes.

The rotary instructions are disappointing. There are many more blocks in the book that could possibly be cut with a rotary cutter, but the author neglected to add the rotary measurements to the list. Then there are some blocks where you could rotary cut the entire block, but the author only gave measurements for a portion of it. Example: Block #31, Eva - The author gives rotary measurements for triangle B, while the entire block could be rotary cut if measurements were simply given. Block #95, Sylvia - is entirely composed of squares and rectangles, but this block is not included in the rotary list at all. To say that rotary instructions are given when possible is very misleading.

Some of the blocks in this book look like they'd be fun to make and look great, HOWEVER, if you want to make the blocks in this book, its crazy complicated. First, there are many errors in the book. Yes, you can find an errata page online for the corrections, but as I said, there are ALOT. That's just for starters. I tried printing out the PDF pages from the CD to print out the templates. Even if I have all my printer settings set up properly, the 1" ruler guide does not measure 1" so I have no idea if my templates are distorted or not! If you don't want to use the templates, in theory all the blocks in the book can be paper pieced, however, I've never seen this method of paper piecing before; instead of being able to print out the entire block and then sew the pieces in numerical order onto a single piece of paper, the book is designed so that you must print out and piece together sub-units and then sew those together to get your finished block, which concerns me because you will need to rip off your paper from your sub-units, before sewing them together, which can cause their shapes to become distorted. It gets even more complicated if you decide to use the Marti Michell acrylic template sets and rulers that are being promoted in the quilt along for this book. I counted at least 9 template sets, and 5 rulers that you would need to make the blocks from the book (huge investment, est. $250.00 if you don't already own some or all of them). On top of that, Marti has decided to release her so called "conversion charts" that tell you which of her acrylic templates you need to make each block, however, she is not releasing these (2 per week, not all at once) in the order they appear in the book AND her "conversion chart" has a different number than the block number! When you look at the charts, she sometimes deviates from the quilt blocks from the book, or "fudges" with her templates because they aren't a perfect match. (When you look at "her" finished blocks on her blog, I'm not seeing blocks that look like a finished square, the edges look pretty wonky to me, which doesn't inspire confidence in using her templates.) In addition, she does not have a single page on her blog with a link list to all the charts or use "labels" for the blog posts where she offers them so you can get to a single page with all the blocks, so if you haven't been following along from the beginning, you'll need to be prepared to spend some time slogging through her blog to get to the blocks you're interested in making. Also, keep in mind, the "Template Sets" are not as thick as the "Rulers" so in my opinion, the "template sets" seemed more geared towards using them to trace around on your fabric for hand cutting, whereas the "rulers" are more geared towards using with a rotary cutter.

I am so confused that the book comes with a cd to print the patterns to paper piece 99 blocks and each pattern is two pages. The first page of the pattern says the name of the pattern and page 1. PAGE 2 OF ALL 99 BLOCKS ARE NUMBERED PAGE 2 WITH NO OTHER REFERENCE. Seriously how hard is to number them? My husband did the numbering for me but I don't understand how the publisher didn't do it.

There are too many corrections to this book to start the project. Check out the author's web site. The author is working with the publisher to correct problems with the CD. I am waiting for those final corrections before I cut into my fabric. What a mess. Quality Control is so very important with a quilting book. Fabric is too expensive now to be a beta tester. There are 2 different Quilt Along gropus on-line and they have the corrections also. Do a search for Farmers Wife 1930 Sampler quilt along and download the corrections. Or, wait until all mistakes are corrected. I believe the fault lies with the publisher and their process with the .pdf files.

If you are purchasing this book for the collection of stories, it's fine. If you are purchasing this book for the quilt patterns, don't expect alot. Ease of use is not part of the equation. The inclusion of a CD is essentially worthless. Had I looked at the book in a brick and mortar store, I would never have made the purchase.

I just finally started making these blocks, jumping on board belatedly with a blogosphere quilt along. I love that, unlike the first Farmer's Wife book, this one includes foundation paper piecing patterns on the CD as well as templates for traditional piecing. I enjoyed reading the letters from the farm women about their daily lives and struggles during the Great Depression, and I'm enjoying making the blocks now as well. I don't love ALL of the blocks in this book, so I'll probably pick and choose which blocks to do from this book, maybe mix in some of the blocks from the previous books, maybe even resize a few of the Dear Jane blocks as well. (The blocks in this book finish at 6".)

It took me a few months to work on the 99 blocks that are included in this (a disk has all the templates included), but to read stories of women who went through The Depression and how they fared as farmer's wives, was really special to go along with each of the blocks. Each story sometimes take up two pages and are real stories that were sent into an old magazine called Farmer's Wife. I so enjoyed this book! Now to put together the blocks and finish this quilt at long last!
