About the Author
LEN RIEDEL is the founder and executive director of the Blue and Gray Education Society. Riedel is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He earned his Master of Arts degree from Old Dominion University. His emphasis was in Policy and Strategy with a thesis on General Magruder and the defense of the Virginia Peninsula. Major Riedel retired from the United States Air Force in 1994. He has played a key role in three previous books with National Geographic and has planned and conducted more than 300 different Civil War battlefield tours in 20 years. He speaks easily without notes on a range of topics.

Lots of good pictures/drawing/lithos. It is a glossy paged book with mention of lots of civil war persons, cites and events and maps showing where these sites were. I found the entries a little too brief and some sites e.g. Mariner's Museum in Norfolk not mentioned and little or not mention of the Monitor ship. I think there are some sites missing that should be there.It is good for the first time traveler on this subject but just tickled my interest and would need to consult a more in depth book.
Great book! Lots of information in a precise manor. I can't wait to visit some of these locations. I also love how they added the "additional reading" sections!
This is an excellent guide for Civil War spots to visit. Many color pictures. I think that it is the best Civil War Guide I have seen.
This guide is quite helpful. It gives a summary of what each place means and then lets you know how to visit it. There are times when the summary could be a little more complete, but perhaps this is unfair since I zeroed in on one particular battlefield where I have taken student groups for years. If you're planning to visit several battlefields, this guide is worth the money. If you don't plan to visit, it still gives you an overview of each place.
Excellent book. Gives great description to hundreds of Civil War battlefields, organized by state, and gives driving directions to them. Plan on keeping it in my car on all trips.
Just Okay. Maps and pictures are all too small to be very meaningful, though there are some nice photos. Overall, rather light and skimpy.
This book is not as detailed as others but it does have great pictures. I would say it is a good supplement to other books on the subject. I used it in conjunction with two others to help plan our family vacation this last summer.
Civil war buffs or history buffs take note of this book and buy it. IEven if you cannot travel to the locations you will enjoy these descriptions and pictures,
