Fun story to share with children
This book has several features that make me rate it 5 stars. First, there is a brief author note with a description of Purim at the beginning of the book, written for adults and a nice refresher for those who need it. It explains not only what is being celebrated, but some of the modern activities used in the celebrations, such as what hamantaschen are and it touches on mishloach manot.The book's illustrations are uncomplicated and get the story across. The story is about a woman who asks her cat, dog and parrot to help her make the hamantaschen, but they are too busy. Turns out they are busy preparing for a Purim party. They eventually all celebrate. Other points I appreciated was that the book shows that they all helped clean up afterward. My favorite part was that in the corner of the last page you can see a mishloach manot basket and a donation to an animal shelter. Nicely made points that make this a lovely Purim present. Oh, and the author includes a hamantaschen recipe at the end (the more common cookie type of hamantaschen, not the bread dough type).
A little old lady is baking cookies. Actually, they are some type of Jewish pastry that has a name about 10 miles long, so we will just call them cookies. She asks for help from the animals to help her bake them. Will they help her? Or will they be too busy?Actually, there is much more to the story than this, but I don't want to ruin the book. The book is really good and cozy.This book is "Jewish", and I had to look up some of the words, as I had no idea what they were. I enjoy reading books of different cultures, especially Jewish, because the Bibles talks so much about them. (By the way, I had no idea this book was "Jewish"; I just chose it at random.)It is good to read to your kid(s), at bedtime and at other times. In fact, I recommend it, as they grow up way too fast. Read to them TODAY!!! There are lots of good books out there to read to them, and this particular book is one you can read to them.
Naomi Highland writes and illustrates a wonderful wondrous lively book about a little old lady (someone's Bubbie?) who is going to bake the Better Than Best Hamantashen Ever. She tries to enlist the aid of her cross-eyed cat, one-spot dog, and parrot, but they are too busy doing cat/dog/parrot things-- or so they tell her. So just as sweet and cheery as ever, she decides to bake the Hamantaschen by herself. Ms. Highland's adorable colorful illustrations happily flow from one page to the next -- as does the story. And as the lady bakes, the cat, dog and parrot ARE doing something else, but it's a surprise; a wonderful colorful happy surprise. And in the end, EVERYONE has truly worked hard -- and happily so, and are now enjoying the fruits of their labors as they all joyfully celebrate Purim.I smiled all the way through the book. The first and last pages also hold a treasure -- the first page defines Purim, Brave Esther, the kind King, Villainous Haman, and the custom of making LOTS of noise during the celebration of Purim, whenever Haman's name is mentioned. The last page of this book has a recipe for Hamantaschen! A great way to end the book - make Hamantaschen!
This is a really cute book for the 2-6 year old age group and adults who also like cute stories about Purim. The book begins with a woman marking down the days until Purim. Her cat asks her if Purim is coming soon and she replies in the affirmative, so the cat runs off. The lady asks the parrot to help her make some "better-than-best hamentaschen." The parrot flies away. The lady asks her dog to help, and the dog also refuses. The lady goes off by herself to make the hamentaschen by herself and unbeknownst to her, the animals spend time preparing for a Purim party. In the end, everyone has a wonderful time and a very special holiday.The pictures in the book are as cute as the story. Kids (& adults) of all ages will enjoy the drawings."The Better-Than-Best Purim" book is a selection of the PJ Library. The PJ Library brings Jewish music and literature to children and provides them free to many communities.
I love this book. What a great story with fun scenarios and morals!The short version is this - a woman asks her pets for help making hamantaschen for Purim. They claim to be too busy, and their excuses get more outlandish as the story goes on. (One animal claims to be going to Peru.) When the woman is done, she's upset that her pets were too busy to help, but discovers that they were setting up a Purim party for all of their friends, and everyone has a great time celebrating. Plus, the animals help clean up.This is a very cute story with plenty of words. It'll have kids laughing as the book progresses and happy at the end.
Do I sound cynical? I guess I am. I have huge collection of children's books that I have culled for over 20 years, and this is the kind of book that I don't think merits much more than a glance, unless -- as I said -- you just have to have a book about Purim. It actually isn't about the holiday itself, being more properly just Purim-related. It does give a recipe for hamentashen, which is nice, but without instructions on how to prepare your own poppyseed or prune filling. It's a Jewish/Purim take-off on the tale of the chicken (or person?) who wants help harvesting the wheat, threshing it, milling it, baking the bread, etc. and then eating it, but no one will help her, so she eats it herself. This lady wants help with the hamentashen but her pets are in another room preparing a big Purim party surprise for her, so she somewhat grumpily does the task herself. I don't know, maybe I've become too New Agey, but wouldn't it be better if she just had a good time making the hamentashen and sharing them, instead of being miffed that no one would help her? At any rate, there are some cute rejoinders from the pets as to why they don't have time to help the poor lady, while they're planning the party. The illustrations are cute, but somewhat cartoonish, if that matters. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not a book that you will savor for the artwork.
