I have enjoyed this series, but this was the weakest one unfortunately. It started off strong, but the last third of the book was quite a letdown. I'll try to explain without spoilers...The unexplained muteness became sort of a random, all-or-nothing, off and on thing that really didn't make a lot of sense. Her character, rather than expanding, just became contradictory and confusing. The protagonist ( I won't name a name to avoid spoiling things) behaved in a way that worked well for the plot, but didn't really make sense of their motives and character. It all seemed a little too convenient. But what bothered me the most was the hero's behavior in the end. The final happy ending depended on him perpetuating a lifelong deception, which seemed very out of character, and wasn't convincingly what was best for either of them. I think there would have been a much more satisfying way to resolve things that would have allowed them to be true to themselves instead of simply Fairy Tale happiness.

By now, I have read all the "Daughters of Allamont Hall," all the "Sons of the Marquess," and as much of the "Sisters of Woodside" novels as have yet been released. Kingswood has said that she is also a huge Jane Austin/Georgette Heyer fan, and tries to follow those excellent examples. She does it very well, indeed!I love that she keeps the language true to the period, and the manners and thought patterns true, also. Yes, she tackles "difficult" subjects (real life problems faced by women) in a more gritty and realistic way than Austin or Heyer ever would have, but she does so without EVER slipping into any kind of anachronism: quite a feat! She's the only author I know of currently writing in this genre that I can say that about (and I read a LOT of Regency novels). I SO appreciate that about her!I enjoyed "The Companion" much more than I thought I would. The previous books in this set made the heroine sound morose and boring. But she's NOT AT ALL! She's delightful, and her adventures are the most interesting of any (so far) of the sisters.I highly recommend this book, and ALL of Kingswoods books if you are a Regency fan.

I didn't like or dislike this one any more than the previous novel. It was good! I thought the solid length was nice, as it kept me occupied over my Christmas break. It was pretty consistently interesting, and I liked Margaret, the "silent" sister, more than I anticipated. That being said, I agree with other reviewers that her speech issue could be very tedious! It was the oddest thing I've seen - being able to say no more than a couple words at a time, then having to write paragraphs of conversation on a slate, then being able to soundly tell off her attacker later on...I realized midway that she's suffering from some form of debilitating anxiety. Undiagnosed, as those things always were. I have a friend who struggles from a similar issue, and like Margaret, can take days to reply to something as simple as a text message, because her anxiety kept her from finding the words to respond. This is a lot like that. It's not that they can't speak, it's that they can't find the words. It can be frustrating to your friends and family, who don't understand and want you to "get over it", but it's not something they can just *stop* feeling. The author had to go about explaining it without flat-out calling it an anxiety disorder, which is likely why readers felt frustrated by the odd problem. While I sympathized, I felt that her using the slate for deep, involved conversation was a bit far-fetched! Maybe it's because we live in a digital world, but the idea of writing so much with a piece of chalk made my wrist sore just thinking about it. I can't see a person being able to sustain those lengthy conversations, or a listener happily waiting for Margaret to finish her paragraph. It would be an agonizingly slow conversation. I can't imagine it.The romance itself was quite sweet, though a bit brow-raising. Mel's dilemma was flat out annoying, tbh. Like screw Lord Fancypants, marry who you want. But he was bound by ~his word~, until he wasn't.. eh, just the idea that he would marry a woman he loved, intending to only live with her platonically - just to keep a promise - blah. Seemed wayyy to far-fetched. Like, impossible. I'm glad it all worked out, because I did not like that one bit.Can I just say tho - other than being magnets for all kinds of criminal activity - these sisters have extremely good luck in the area of husbands? I need some of that, lol. I liked how the sisters' stories all intersect, and that we actually got see to her and Lucy together in this one, and the charming Mr. Audley. I anticipate book 5 very much, since I imagine it'll be like the Avengers of Winterton siblings. XDOverall, it was a cute romance and intriguing story. As usual, I could predict the culprit, but not their motivation, so I was happy to read to the end to see it all unfold. I look forward very much to Fanny, as I expect her to be an absolute delight. I have seen a little bit of myself in each sister, which is why I think I've stuck around so far. Would recommend this series to anyone who likes period romance and mystery.

This is the weakest book in the series. Margaret tried my patience throughout the entire novel. I wanted to reach out and slap her and tell her to "JUST TALK FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!" Her inability to speak (words caught in her throat) was annoying and patently ridiculous. Until Book 3, I was galloping through the series, absolutely delighted with the concept of a separate book for each sister, and found the rest of the sisters interesting and charming in their unique ways. The stories were engaging and characters entertaining. This book brought me to a screeching halt. Skim this one, and when I say skim, I mean skip most of it! Very disappointing.

The first two books were at least plausible but this one is quite dumb. The writing is good but the story line is just not there. I cannot believe that a woman of the regency era who cannot "talk" would be as able to flourish as this character did. .

The author did it again weaving a wonderful tale of the third sister and leaving plenty of room for the story to proceed on. Oh how different each sister’s personality is and I can feel the love they have for one another even though they are separated by great distance. It is refreshing to see how family members can stay connected and rejoice in one another’s good fortune.

I loved this series and looked forward to each one. Each sister is different as are the circumstances they deal with. Fleshed-out supporting characters and charming dialogue make these clean reads interesting fun to read.

Love this series, well written characters and the author stayed with in the period. She keeps the story moving. I am looking forwardto the next in the series which is already pre-ordered
