Readers of her 1995 novel, Memnoch the Devil, will recall that the vampire Armand ended his existence by stepping into the sun. Since he was a popular character from earlier tales, a resounding protest from fans followed. In response, Rice concocted a way in this, her seventh Vampire Chronicle since Interview with the Vampire (1976), to raise Armand from the dead. He is, in fact, the narrator of this story, in which he looks back on his earthly existence, revisiting his apprenticeship in 16th-century Venice to the regal vampire artist, Marius De Romanus, who saved his life with the kiss of immortality. Afterward, Armand returned to his Russian homeland, but when disaster parted him from Marius, he became the nihilistic leader of a pack of Parisian vampires. Rice offers exquisite details of erotic romps and political intrigues while reprising other material familiar to her fans, but finally returns to the pressing question of what happened to Armand in the sun's lethal rays. She supplies a vivid and resonant description of the experience, set against the counterpoint of Beethoven's Appassionata. Unfortunately, she dims the effect by dragging Armand through rambling scenes involving two odd children, Sybelle and Benji. I keep coming back to this one, because it ties in so many of the remaining loose holes from the previous "Vampire Chronicles" (Interview...The Vampire Lestat...The Queen...The Tale...Memnoch). The story starts at a present in which Lestat dominates the present, to Armand's descent into a decadent life in his late boyhood (teens), progresses to his vampiric leadership in Paris, then a return to the present, and a show of just how graceful and strong he has become. Most importantly, I feel this book is the most telling of Anne Rice, her genre/themes, and her writing style. Anne Rice has one of the most unique styles out there, neither the best nor the worst (where to begin- with the plot holes or the WTF twists or the flippant supernatural happenstance?). Throughout, I am endeared with admiration for her gift of story-crafting.
Has been my favorite author since Jr High, and I have always been quite the bibliophile (now in my 30s). I have my 7th grade daughter reading these books now. They are transforming, rich, educational, and complex. I have more respect for Anne Rice then any other fiction writer rivaled only by Daniel Quinn, possibly. Her characters and dialogues are so well written that I would easily believe that she listened to these conversations as they happened. Vampires that were "created" 6,000 years ago to today from locations all over the world provides readers with tantalizing glimpses into histories and cultures that must have cost Rice quite a bit of research to deliver. Romantic and dark, her books find the spark of poetry in the most Stoic of souls--- as poetic as that may sound, I am known for being fairly Stoic.
I really enjoyed this book! From the moment I started reading it, I found that it was hard to put down. Once I'd put it down for a minute or two, it called to me to read on. I have always enjoyed the character of Armand and this book deepens that enjoyment. It tells you of how Armand was transformed into a vampire and why he did the things that he did to Louis and Lestat. If you enjoy the Vampire Chronicles and reading Anne Rice's novels then you shouldn't miss the chance to read this book. To put it plainly, I don't really know why this book got so many bad reviews. I found that it was a very good book. The only thing that I can think of is that those readers that rated it badly are tired with the series or Anne's writing and should just give up on it. There's no use sniveling about things that you have no control over so just stop reading her works if you think that they are getting worse. I personally do not hold that opinion. I feel that this is a great book and is a worthy addition the rest of the Vampire Chronicles. If you haven't read this novel, go out and get it now!
What makes Armand so fascinating is his love-hate relationship with Lestat and Anne Rice has totally satisfied our curiosity and hunger for more about Armand in this 6th book.When Lestat first set eyes on Armand, he saw a face that was "..shining white and perfect, the countenance of a god it seemed, a Cupid out of Caravaggio, seductive yet ethereal, with auburn hair and dark brown eyes.." and a shock came through Lestat which he felt wasn't merely because of Armand's beauty but " the astonishing innocence of his boyish face." There is always a kind of vulnerability about Armand who was rescued from his doomed brothel fate and made a vampire by the powerful Marius when he was barely a teenager. After his accidental stint of heading up an evil coven with Satino, he pleaded to go with Lestat but had to reluctantly accept Lestat's offer to take over The Theatre of the Vampires so he could understand the age he lived in through its literature, music and arts.We have the first glimpse of their love-hate relationship when Lestat came back defeated and almost destroyed by his fledglings Louis and Claudia. He blamed Lestat for coming back to him only for help and not his companionship. After throwing Lestat out, he went back pleading but Lestat's vicious observation was how "delicious it was, the hatred between us, or so I thought. Such unfamiliar excitement, to have him there to ridicule and despise." To Armand, Lestat is "..not a bad friend to have, and one for whom I would lay down my immortal life, one for whose love and companionship I have ofttimes begged, one whom I find maddening and fascinating and intolerably annoying, one without whom I cannot exist."In time, Armand has lived his life time with Louis, Daniel and created the luxurious fantasy on earth, the splendid "Night Island" and went to Christ and back. But Armand has always been an abandoned child.This 6th Vampire Chronicle devotes entirely to Armand and begins with his needs to be around Lestat who now lay motionless on the chapel's marble floor. David Talbot, the scholar vampire manages to persuade Armand to tell his story with him writing it down.There is no adventure like Armand's adventure which is absolutely absorbing and thrilling all the way through with Armand sharing his intimate thoughts with us. It takes us right from the beginning when Marius made him a vampire and named him "Amadeo" the Beloved of God, to the hitherto unbeknown grotesque details of Claudia's last moments at his blundering hands, to the happy ending of all his love returned, by his Master, Marius, his companion, Louis and his much loved Lestat and most of all by his "children" Sybelle and Benji who love him as no one has ever loved him.
Anne Rice is one of the greats where vamps are concerned and she did not leave anything out concerning Armand's complex nature or the twists and turns in the plot. Always a surprise here and there throughout. When she has written her Vampire series she makes it seem as though you really know them not just as vampires but also what remains of their humanity be it cynical, caring, remorseful, loving, and more. Every vamp has his or her own personality.
Always have loved the series. Rereading the series. Loved it the first time as paper back years earlier. Loving the fact that I can buy it as a e-book and read anytime.
I rate Vampire Armand 5 stars because it's a good back story that explains why Armand interacts with the rest of the characters in the Vampire Chronicles like he does. It helps you feel that much closer to the characters when you have their backstories. I have only one book left to read. Prince Lestat. But a few more to buy to replace ones that have been stolen. I would recommend this book to anyone who reads Anne Rice books. The side stories on the other vampires gives you all those questions you have while reading the Chronicles. It's worth the time and reading.
