I bought this book with the sole purpose of learning VBA programming to help me sift through reams of research data. Let me start by saying that if you have never programmed before, then this title is absolutely NOT for you. If you were expecting to learn how to use Excel, ditto!I am a seasoned hobbyist programmer mostly experienced with old procedural languages, from assembly language and up, so programming is certainly not foreign to me. My experience with Excel, on the other hand, is rather basic, and I have increasingly become aware of the need to truly leverage the hidden powers of Excel in order to streamline my work as a medical researcher.Did this book teach me VBA? Yes, but only because I was able to deduce many of the concepts from the variety of examples presented. For example, nowhere in the book are you taught how to initialize variables, what types and characteristics of variables are available, etc... You'd think this would be a fundamental topic to address very early on, so go figure... And the list goes on. The book is a mishmash of concepts ordered almost haphazardly, and to make matters even worse the code examples more often than not use concepts not yet addressed, leading to even more head-scratching and web hunting.Nonetheless, I persevered, picking and choosing the chapters I thought would be more relevant to my needs and to my general progressive understanding of the language. In the end, I was indeed able to create decent VBA modules from scratch, but frankly, I am rather hesitant to attribute a lot of credit to the authors or the book beyond a minimal nod as I give the lion's share of credit to my doggedness and my refusal to throw away a book I had just paid close to $40 for...One last thing: the web site which is supposed to contain all the code examples and sample spreadsheets used in the book only points you to the book's sale page. This is problematic as well because many of the examples assume you have access to a specific spreadsheet. Hopefully, that's an oversight which will be corrected soon.In the end, I, unfortunately, cannot recommend this book as an effective learning tool without a good programming background and lots of patience. Perhaps a future edition will address these shortcomings because there is certainly potential there.
