As other reviewers have stated, this book is hard to read. To follow the story of one family from a person who witnessed the attacks and killing of innocent people is mind-numbing. I will never understand how humans can hate so much and are willing to kill so easily. That being said, I am glad that I read this book, because I learned about the inner strength and will of these amazing Jewish sisters who were determined to survive even at the hands of their enemies. Like other survivors, by the end of the war they weighed around 40 pounds. The author states they stayed alive for each other, and could not have willed themselves to live if they had been alone like many others who lost, or were separated from, their loved ones during their ordeal.
This tale of love in an inhumane place moved my soul. The triumph of Isabella against insurmountable odds but at such a tremendous cost brought the faint pulling of my own Jewish roots back to life. She managed to make her story so compelling that I felt her victory, the sheet power of her will to live, lit a flame of incomprehensible pride in her, in those people who lived, in those people who died, in my great uncle Barish Meyer Rosenstein and his entire family who live only in the photo my grandmother gave me 35 years ago. I am humbled and so very impressed with Isabella and her harrowing tale. I couldn't put it down. Every person skulls read this to be sure that we never forget, never dismiss, never accept and so that Isabella's example never dies.
You can call me a "compulsive" reader. I mean, I can easily read a book or two a week. When it comes to Holocaust memoirs, I've read about a hundred. Just can't get enough on such a painful moment in history. "FRAGMENTS OF ISABELLA" is in a class by itself. There are good memoirs, there are great memoirs and then, we have The Classics. This little book conveys so much power in every single page that the reader will remain in "awe" for days after putting it down. In fact, you are never able to put it down: this mind-boggling work of art will remain in your head and soul for a long, long time. I feel unfair giving this masterpiece only five stars. For works such as this one there should be an exceptional SIX star rating.
This book was a short read. The author told her story of what she and her family endured during their captivity in a death camp. It was heart-wrenching to read her account. Her prose was distinct in the way she described those days. It felt as if you were by her side. I enjoyed this book and would recommend this read to anyone that is interested in a firsthand account from a death camp survivor.
The writer was one of six children with their mother deported to a concentration camp. Her mother and youngest sister were immediately sent to the ovens. Their mother told them they must live, so they struggled to do that. They were separated from their brother but found each other after the war. They lost one more sister before the war ended. Their father had gone to the United States attempting to get his family there. It got approved after the war started and they were unable to go then. I don't know how you have a normal life after an experience like this. A friend of mine worked on my family tree and with the research he did, he found two people from my family who were murdered in the death camps. The author shared her and her sisters' account of being in Auschwitz and two other camps. They were teenagers then and experienced the worst from this period of their lives. Very touching!
One of this genre's best! Each chapter is short enough to capture a young reader's attention, yet with few expletives so that the book may be used as a teaching tool for history or social studies, or even geography. The epilogue wraps up Isabella's later life perfectly. American youth seems to have been short-changed of this incredibly horrible piece of German man's inhumanity to man. If you're interested in the reasons behind The Holocaust, more reading should be done.
I appreciate the strength and effort it must have taken to write this book, this truth, about what happened to the author and her family during one of the most horrific times in human history. I am appalled by what human kind is capable of, but I am even more impressed with this woman's survival and hopeful healing.
“Fragments of Isabella†is an Auschwitz memoir which offers an intimate look into one of the darkest parts of the twentieth-century history. Each chapter is a short fragment of a certain pivotal point in Isabella’s life: the deportation, the ghetto, the train, the camp itself. Despite those chapters being short, I was amazed at the author’s ability to put so many powerful emotions into so few words that I needed to catch a break from time to time simply because it was too difficult to continue. Her prose is so imaginary, so brutally vivid that one can’t help but find themselves reliving the events together with the author, suffering along with her, losing family members one by one, encountering the ugliest evil and the most inspiring instances of personal sacrifice, and finally finding the salvation which had nearly evaded them during the last of death marches. It’s an extremely powerful book and a true must-read for everyone, not just people interested in history. It will touch the deepest chords of your soul and leave you breathless after the last page is turned. I really can’t recommend it highly enough!
