I can only second Kiki G.'s comment: No amount of video documentaries can take the place of a well-researched book. As a cyclist for many years I thought I had Lance Armstrong's number long before his public disgrace. But no, it took this book to learn the extent of his depravity and how he wouldn't have got away with it as long as he did without the cooperation of some enablers who have escaped being swept up with him and somehow remain respectable today.I do not think it's a stretch to view Armstrong's fall — worthy of Shakespeare! — as emblematic of how the American dream has gone astray. These days the dream is equated with wealth, and Macur's painstaking research shows us that wealth, not fame, was Armstrong's primary motivator. But the original American dream was about success, which is very different from wealth. (Those who would confuse the two only prove my point.)When success involves cheating on competitors, ruining the lives of some of your closest friends, lying to millions who have placed their hopes in you, and probably spoiling the chances for one of the greatest of sports to survive in this country — those consequences to not bear out the true meaning of the word "success."Armstrong's rise and fall is a tremendously compelling story, all the more because it really happened. But have we witnesses to history taken up the dark admonition that appears throughout Macu's prose: that wealth without honor is no virtue? And that living a fulfilled life that serves a worthwhile if not particularly profitable purpose is no vice?We don't have to read the book to know that, somewhat ironically, Armstrong is in the process of losing his ill-begotten gains to his commercial sponsors who are suing him for their return. Such hypocrites! But what this book tells us is that more than all the shaming, the process of losing his wealth could just possibly make Armstrong a better man. Here's hoping.
I'm not a cycling fan but couldn't help but follow Armstrong's rise and fall over the years. This is an incredibly well researched, detailed book on his triumphs, struggles, professional and romantic relationships and of course his doping. I knew he had rubbed a lot of people the wrong way over the years but had no idea the extent to which he burned bridges going back to his teens. Kind of a ruthless bastard.I don't feel bad for him but will say this in his defense: EVERYBODY in that sport doped. So if one just wanted to be relevant in the sport not to mention a champion, doping was mandatory. Doesn't excuse his transgressions though.
I could not put down this book from the moment I started. While I knew about the doping from the Walsh book and online accounts, this is the only stuff I have read about Lance Armstrong the person.That alone is quite a ride, so to speak.If we want to see the rise and fall of a complete User; who picks up people for what they can do for him and then discards them like a snotty tissue, dive right in. This book is well written, well researched, and completely riveting in the tale it tells.
Ok. I'm only in page 129 and writing this review. It isn't going to get more or less credible. REMEMBER, she's an "award winning journalist"...code for I'll say whatever I have to to sell! SHE'S a word DOPER! Just drop the quotation marks and keep typing.It IS entertaining and that's all I bought it for. Her accounts seem to contradict other accounts or stretch the info to the breaking point. Too dramatic. Too biased. Sure Armstrong used PEDs. So? The whole peloton was and is dirty. I'M GLAD HE KEPT HIS CUPS AND JERSEYS. HE BEAT FRANCE AT THEIR GAME. THE $WHOLE$ GAME.
This was hard for me to read. I knew some things about Lance A before I read it including his flawed character and the high likelihood that he doped and drugged. Since that was not exactly a surprise I took some other surprises away from the book. I did not realize the extent to which everyone doped, even the domestiques on most if not all of the teams. I have to believe that in my heart cycling has been as dirty as possible since its inception, kinda like car racing back in the day when officials had no way to look out for cheats. That Armstrong was a liar and a prick is undeniable. That he was also an incredibly gifted and dedicated to the point of death as a cyclist seems undeniable as well. I loath part of him and I love part of him. Very Flawed and yet no more so than any champion in his sports it seems. I also have to believe that cycling is not clean now either. While all of that colors my feelings and thoughts about cycling it does not really affect my overall feelings of the Armstrong era- most interesting and dramatic era for American cycling. The sport will not survive another fiasco like this so I hope they really do clean it up. Then we can work on MMA Baseball, Football, soccer,etc etc. The book is readable and no holds barred- great work!
This book begins and ends magnificently, with a fascinating portrait of Lance Armstrong on his way out of his Austin mansion and some impressive sleuth work on his early childhood and family. But it struggles in the middle chapters to match the highs set at the beginning and end, which, we learn later, were the result of a four-hour interview done in Austin as Lance was leaving his house. Lance comes off rather badly -- the bullying behaviour is rather amply described, and at a level of detail that other accounts have missed. But the reader is left nonetheless with the feeling that Lance may be only half-wrong here -- he has in fact been saddled with the sins of a deeply corrupt sport, where his principal sin was to do so well at it, and to treat so many people so badly along the way. It's a good read, if you're interested in the story, especially the beginning and ending chapters. But the middle chapters seem very hastilly written, and curiously missing in key detail -- Lance breaking his collarbone during his comeback, Marco Pantani's untimely death, and a sharper account of Floyd Landis' humongous flame out. All in all recommended reading, but it falls a bit short of being the definitive account of this man and his sport.
