Hand this book to misbehaving, socially awkward, or disengaged boys and girls.... Hopefully, this isn't the last we hear from Rafe Khatchadorian."―The Associated Press"It's a chatty, funny, engaging book, one that often addresses the reader directly. Patterson... knows how to structure a plot and builds in some surprising--even touching--twists.... My 9 year old son was stuck on diary of a wimpy kid and big nate. I’ve been trying to push him to something new and bought this. There are some cartoons inside so it’s not so intimidating. He read the whole book in one day. Then re read it the next day. This seems to be a great book if you want one level up from the other books I mentioned. My son is a strong reader (level U).
My son isn't an avid reader and its been difficult to find books that he enjoys reading. This one was spot on! He LOVED it and can't wait to see the movie. Very easy read, took him a little more than a week to finish it. We're on to the House of Robots...I expect it to be as entertaining for him as this book was.
I'm reading this to my seventh grade language arts class. It's hilarious and thought provoking and they love it! Can't wait for the movie in November.
My 8 and 9 years old kids like to read books. They finished reading series such as Judy Moody, Captain Underpants, Stick Dog and similar. So I was searching for the similar types of books and I saw reviews on Middle School books and decided to give it a try. They really liked it. I think now we will finish the books in this series!
I previously commented on another James Patterson book in error. I thought this is the one I was commenting on. Oh well, here it is again.I found the first 20 chapters funny and entertaining. However, I had downloaded it for my son. At first, he seemed to like it, but he never did finish it. He is a very good reader, but he does not share the same love for it as I do. If your child loves to read, he or she will probably enjoy this book. It is a free download so it is worth checking out. If your child enjoys the sample chapters, you can purchase the book.
My granddaughter loved this book and could not put it down.
I can understand why people who don't read much early and middle grade fiction might think that this is a good choice for their reader. The confessional narration, the reference to current issues, the type of humor, all suggest that this would be a good choice for a middle grader. And it's not a bad choice, in the sense that it is not in any way affirmatively harmful. And Patterson is a recognized brand name. It's just that this book is among the weakest choices compared to the literally dozens of works out there that are more authentic, better written, more genuine and more honest, and more appealing than this book. These other choices have been written by authors who seem to actually value what they're doing, and try to do something beyond just paint-by-the-numbers books. I'd suggest trying some Tom Angleberger, Michael Buckley, Andrew Clements, Eoin Colfer, Bruce Coville, Ron Koertge, Gary Paulsen or Richard Peck. Each of these established authors has written very satisfying, and funny and thoughtful, middle grade fiction. And if you want a book exactly like this one, but funnier , more engaging, and more authentic and better written, try any of Greg Heffley's volumes in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series from Jeff Kinney.
My son does not like to read, but I bought this book for my son's 12th birthday, after I saw the ad on TV, hoping it would hold his interest. I read it first and I was hooked! I couldn't put it down! It was well written with real life kid and family issues that you can relate to easily. It was funny and entertaining and had great pictures in the book. My son, stayed up 3 nights in a row to read this book by flashlight!!! He loved it. I have never found a book to capture his interest so well. Since I had read it first, I asked him questions about what he had read and then would give him teasers to keep his interest peaked to find the answers. He texted me in the middle of the night to tell me about "Leo", a character in the book. (ha-ha) This is a fabulous book for a middle school boy. My son and I highly recommend it - even for those finicky readers!!!
