My Dad Is an Alcoholic, What about Me? A Pre-Teen Guide to Conquering Addictive Genes, is a book that I wish I could have read as a Pre-teen. Like Marc, many people are raised in an environment where every adult drank. The more drinking stories you told, the better. This book is written for the Pre-Teen, to help prevent them from saying "I wish someone would have just told me". If you or your spouse drinks, I suggest you buy the book and make sure you read chapter 4. Take the time to teach your children about addiction.

A great book for anyone struggling with addiction and those that love someone struggling with addiction. It is written in a way that young people can easily understand.

Marc Treitler’s new book, My Dad Is an Alcoholic, What about Me? A Pre-Teen Guide to Conquering Addictive Genes, is both informative and entertaining. It’s written in a uniquely comfortable style which makes a very serious and sometimes dark subject easy to understand and absorb.A recovering alcoholic himself, Marc’s experience and insight into the disease adds realism and credibility to the topic for young people who may have family members suffering from alcoholism, or are directly affected by someone close to them who is addicted. The entire Treitler family collaborated on My Dad Is an Alcoholic. Marc wrote it; his daughter Lianna contributed a section at the conclusion of the chapters in which she offers her own thoughts about alcoholism and addiction, even adding a prayer. Marc’s wife, Rowena, and their son, Bennett, contributed illustrations. After having interviewed dozens of addicts, Marc discovered none of them were taught as children about the disease hiding in their genes. Marc readily admits there are things he wished he knew about addiction when he was a child, particularly that if addition resides in the genes of a family there’s a good chance children will suffer from the disease themselves. That is, unless you are made aware of the danger and fight to resist falling victim. That is the goal of Marc’s book—to arm people with the knowledge about addiction, both to alcohol and/or drugs, so that no one looks back in twenty years and says, “I wish someone had just told me—“Some of the chapters include: Why can’t he stop; Peer Pressure; Is There A Cure?; Prescription Pills; and The Twelve Steps. One chapter discusses the question, Is There A Cure? Marc’s answer is “Yes! The cure is simple: never let the disease start in the first place. Prevention is the only foolproof, 100 percent guaranteed, for certain cure for addiction.”The truth is there is no cure. Once you have the disease it’s a life-long battle to combat it. The struggle never ends, there’s an ebb and flow to maintaining sobriety. Some people mange quite well by avoiding people and places where their resolve is tested. Others must attend regular 12-Step Meetings and surround themselves with those who have successfully maintained sobriety for long periods of time.Marc concludes his message to young people by using a peanut allergy analogy. Many people have an allergic reaction to peanuts and any food containing peanuts. Some children’s reactions are so severe that everyone around them, even at school, cannot eat peanuts or bring anything made with peanuts. The situation is sometimes so severe that a child can die if exposed to peanuts. The same thing applies to addiction. An addict must stay away from alcohol/drugs because it causes a reaction that can result in death. The end can come in myriad ways, alcohol poisoning, overdose, liver and kidney disease, a traffic accident. Death can be immediate or long term, but make no mistake—an untreated addiction is deadly. My Dad Is an Alcoholic is a book that may have an impact on the children of addicts and alcoholics. It can enable them to understand what’s going on with one of their parents, a sibling, relative or friend. The book is an open and honest way of answering questions and giving youngsters a way to head off a disease that has the potential of negatively affecting their future.

Marc Treitler shares his journey from being genetically predisposed to alcoholism to succumbing to the disease and to his recovery and the help, resources and love that broke the pattern of addiction. READ THIS BOOK to understand that alcoholics are people, but alcoholism is a disease. Marc says that if one of your parents has an addiction you might have that same allergy hiding in your genes and may be able to turn off that allergy before it becomes activated. Remember environment also plays a role and can be a large part of addiction risk. Marc's hope is to educate teenagers and their parents so they understand the risk in early age drinking and benefits to waiting to drink at least to the age of 21. The younger a child starts to drink, the greater the likelihood of addiction. Parents should not set up an environment encouraging or providing alcohol to their children. Marc also suggests various types of treatment programs that are available as it is necessary to have a team to support defeating alcoholism and for regaining your state of health. Family involvement and professional help are a great aid in conquering addictions of any kind. Practical and helpful!

I can't say enough great things about this book! I purchased several copies and have handed them out to friends and family - anyone I knew who might benefit from the fresh perspective this book offers. "My Dad Is an Alcoholic, What about Me?" is not your average anti-drinking, anti-drug message that kids receive today. It's a unique approach that not only discusses the consequences of alcoholism and addiction, but also delves into the how and WHY certain kids are predisposed to the addictive gene. The author's conclusion: Knowledge truly is power under these circumstances, and is the best preventative measure anyone can take against this disease - especially our children. Marc's personal journey is touching and his actions in and after recovery are a true testament to the love of his family. This book is great for your children, your nephews, your nieces, your friends' children, etc. - anyone and everyone can benefit from it. And the family-style approach in which it was written can facilitate family-style conversations about this topic that affects so very many people. Bravo to Marc and his family for starting this critical dialogue! Highly, highly recommend!
